Why Ferrari's Disaster Of A Season... Is A Blessing In Disguise

After Pre-season testing, many people believed that Ferrari had a significant advantage heading into the first race. That was up until Q3 in Australia when both cars were much slower than the two Mercedes. In round 1, many rumours suggested that Ferrari had been running their engines in a lower power mode because of some concern with Reliability. Whether this was true or not, it was clear from then on the Maranello based team had got the SF90's philosophy wrong, but this is actually a good sign.
You may be wondering why having one of Ferrari's worst seasons in the hybrid era is positive. Well... Lets put it this way. Mercedes have everything to lose this season so no matter what they need to work on improving their car all season long putting more focus onto the current car than the W11 because if they stopped developing this years car, Red Bull could theoretically win the world championship with Max Verstappen. However, if your part of the Italian team in red, you have nothing to lose. At some tracks that require low drag like Spa and Monza, they will potentially have the fastest car. Ferrari will not have a winless season and that is all that the record books will show, thus meaning that Ferrari can completely disregard this year's car and in terms of development they probably had shifted their focus to next years car from France onwards.
This gives the team a monumental advantage for next year. However, failing that, let's presume that next years car is awful and worse than this year's challenger. That's right, the 2021 regulations will completely shake up the order! Ferrari may have just pulled off an unintentional masterstroke.
